COLUMBUS, Ohio (WTVN)--A proposal at the Ohio Statehouse introduced on Thursday would make it tougher for voters to amend Ohio's constitution.
Secretary of State Frank LaRose and State Representative Brian Stewart introduced the legislation, which would require constitutional amendments before voters in Ohio to receive 60% approval. Right now, they only need a simple majority to take effect.
LaRose says the enhancement would ensure that out-of-state activists and special interests would not be part of re-writing Ohio's constitution. He also cited traditionally red and blue states that already have a 60% requirement for constitutional amendments to pass.
Critics argue that Republicans are proposing the changes before initiatives they disagree with, like abortion or redistricting rules, can be put through as constitutional amendments in Ohio.
