NURSING HOMES AND COVID-19 TESTING

There’s no doubt the most vulnerable members of the population in America when it comes to the corona virus, are living in nursing homes. And Ohio is #3 in the nation for the number of nursing homes in the state, trailing only California and Texas, and even more than the state of Florida. The Buckeye State has 957 nursing care facilities, with over 72,000 total residents. The American Health Care Association that oversees nursing homes, is asking the federal government for 10-billion dollars to help provide testing for nursing home residents and staff.Testing of these individuals just once is estimated to cost $440-million.And to continue testing staff of nursing homes weekly would likely cost more than 1 billion dollars.Nursing homes do not have the resources to tackle that cost, and that’s why they are seeking help from federal sources.
