U.S. Employers Affected But Unprepared For Opioids

Seventy-five percent of U.S. employers say they have been directly affected by opioids. According to a survey conducted by the National Safety Council, only 17% of employers feel well prepared to deal with the issue. Nick Smith, interim president and CEO of the National Safety Council, says "The opioid crisis is truly encompassing nearly every aspect of American lives. Today's survey confirms that the number-one cause of preventable death is not just taking its toll on our home lives, but companies across the country are also grappling with the impact of this epidemic." In fact, 38% of companies have experienced absenteeism or impaired worker performance and 31% have had an overdose, arrest, near miss or injury because of employee opioid use.
